Chartered in 1873 and named after E.H. Richardson who built the railroad from Dallas to Denton, Richardson was ushered into the electronic age by Collins Radio in the early 1950s. Now Richardson is home to Nortel Networks, Cisoc Systems, Fujitsu, Southwestern Bell, WorldCom, Boeing and 700 other high-tech firms, which is why the area has been named the Telecom Corridor.

Along with high-tech, Richardson touts two of the best public school districts in the greater Dallas area. The RISD has been recognized by the US Department of Education, the American Federation of Teachers and the Institute for Responsive Education as one of the top 25 school districts in the United States. More than 90 percent of Plano ISD graduates go on to college, and many of them stay in the area at institutions such as the University of Texas at Dallas, Richland College, Collin County Community College and the satellite centers of Southwestern Methodist University and the University of Dallas.

Richardson has homes and apartments in a variety of price ranges. The largest section of the city for new development is the Breckinridge area, which hosts a 550-acre regional park, waterways and trails all placed in a desirable rural setting. Most residents live within a half-mile of 29 city parks and are connected to the 17-mile trail system.
